Palliative care is treatment, care and support for people with a life-limitoing illness. The aim of palliative care is to help you to have a good quality of life.
With palliative care, the focus in on relieving pain and other trouble symptoms and meeting your emotional, spiritual and practical needs. This also includes support for your family and friends.
Today , patients with cancer, heart disease, chronic lung disease, Alzheimer’s and many other serious illness are eligible for palliative care.
You can receive palliative care at any stag in your illness. Having palliative care doesn’t necessarily mean that you are likely to die soon- some people receive palliative care for years. You can also have palliative care alongside treatments, therapies and medicines aimed at controlling your illness, such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
Many people associate palliative care with end of life care. Although all end of life of care includes palliative care, not all palliative care is end of life care.
